Slowing Down Before Beltane: A Time to Reflect, Release, and Renew

I don’t know about you, but I woke up this morning feeling the deep need to rest,  to slow right down after what feels like weeks of non-stop doing.
Maybe it’s the new moon energy today, usually I find myself during new moons wanting to retreat, to go into my own quiet darkness, and be still.
To see what might arise when I stop pushing.

It’s fascinating, because just yesterday I was buzzing around with so much energy, doing a thousand things, feeling alive and vibrant. And now today, it’s as if I’ve been hit by a brick wall, suddenly feeling heavy and immovable.

If you’re feeling this too, please know: you are not alone.

The Energetic Push and Pull of This Season

This time of year carries a pull that’s hard to ignore. It is a time for awakening.
The birds are building nests, the tides are stronger, and the moon is closer.
It can feel like we’re being pulled in every direction, emotionally, mentally, physically and honestly, it’s exhausting.

There’s this narrative that we “should” be getting busy, preparing for the bounty of the year. But if you’re feeling stretched thin, scattered, or overwhelmed right now, you are moving in rhythm with the world.

Let’s explore how we can honour that and how we can soften, even as the energy around us speeds up.

Acknowledging the Exhaustion

The first and often the hardest step is simply acknowledging how you feel.
Maybe you’ve just come through Easter holidays, with more outdoor time, more activities, less quiet. Maybe you’ve noticed your body aching for slowness, while life demands you move faster.

It’s draining and that’s okay.

There is nothing wrong with you if you are tired. You are not failing because you need to step back. In fact, recognising your need for stillness is a radical act of self-support in a culture that always asks for more.

Giving Yourself Space to Breathe

If your body is calling for contemplation, listen.
This might mean taking a solitary walk through the woods, spending an afternoon with a deeply supportive friend, or simply carving out ten minutes for a grounding meditation.

When everything around you feels like it’s rushing forward, your soul may simply be asking for space to integrate, to breathe, to reconnect.

I know for me, when I don’t make time to journal or sit quietly, I start feeling untethered, like there’s a piece of me searching for something it can’t quite reach.
It’s so easy to get distracted. And it’s also important to normalise that falling out of supportive routines doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

Life will pull us off course sometimes. The key is to have tiny anchors, small, nourishing practices you can return to even when the bigger rituals feel too far away.
And to trust that you will find your way back when you’re ready.

The Quiet Impact of Our Everyday Choices

I recently spent a few days away, and it didn’t take long for my usual rhythms to shift with different foods, more sugar, fewer vegetables.
My energy changed. My sleep was disrupted. My mood felt more irritable.

Isn’t it strange how the very things we often use to “treat” ourselves can leave us feeling even more depleted?

I don’t have all the answers but I’m sitting with this right now:
Sometimes what feels good in the moment doesn’t actually support our long-term wellbeing.
And sometimes, letting go of what seems comforting is actually an act of deep self-care.

Do you notice this too?

Preparing for Beltane: A Time of Reflection and Renewal

All of this reflection feels especially timely, because we are approaching Beltane on May 1st,  the ancient fire festival that marks the turning from spring into summer.

This is the perfect moment to pause and ask yourself:
What am I ready to let go of, so that something beautiful can bloom?

This new moon invites us to prepare for Beltane not by doing more, but by clearing space for the life that wants to move through us.

If you can, find a little pocket of time between now and Beltane for some gentle journal enquiry.
Here are a few prompts you might like to explore:

  • In what ways can you honour the slow, sacred rhythm of your unfolding, without rushing, without force?
  • What dreams are whispering, asking for your presence and quiet tending?
  • Where are you feeling called to root in more deeply and to trust the quiet magic rising within you?
  • What seeds are ready to be planted now, sprouting from the rich soil of all you’ve been through lately?

The Magic and Momentum of Beltane

Beltane is one of the ancient fire festivals, a celebration of life bursting into full bloom.

It’s a time when the land hums with fire, movement, and possibility. Traditionally, it was marked with bonfires, fertility rites, and offerings to the spirits of the earth.
The veil between worlds thins in a different way now, the fae and nature spirits draw closer, brushing our world with their vibrant magic.

The energy of Beltane is alive and fast. Plants stretch taller. Animals stir. Everything hums with momentum.
It’s the season when desire moves into action. When what you’ve been quietly holding inside begins to reach into the world.

In ancient traditions, a May Queen (and sometimes a May King) would be crowned to embody the union of masculine and feminine forces not always in literal ways, but through ritual, dance, and offering.
Deities like Pan, Cernunnos, and Flora  spirits of growth, desire, and life-force energy  were honored at this time.

The maypole dance, weaving bright ribbons around the pole, beautifully symbolises this energy: connection, movement, life spiraling outward.

Today, Beltane still carries that vibrant charge. Growth is happening all around you, whether you feel ready or not.
This season of expansion meets you exactly where you are.

Trusting Your Own Timing

As we move toward Beltane, remember: you don’t have to force yourself to match the pace of the world around you.
Nature is bursting forth, but every tree, every blossom, every creature moves at its own rhythm.

You are allowed to move at yours, too.

Let this be a season not just of outer blooming, but of inner tending of clearing, nourishing, making space for what matters most.

You are growing, brave one. Even in the stillness. Especially in the stillness.
And Beltane is your invitation to trust the life that is moving through you wild, beautiful, and right on time.
